COMMUNITY TRAINING CENTRE
Ogra Dun Dealgan Community Training Centre was the first centre of its kind in Dundalk when set up in September 1985. The centre was set up when members of Ogra Dun Dealgan became aware and concerned about the number of unskilled and untrained young people in the town and surrounding area who, with a low standard of formal education stood little chance of becoming gainfully employed.
The centre which is managed by Aidan Gaughran, was formally based in part of the Old Boy's Technical School, Chapel Street, Dundalk, and in April 2003 moved to Mulholland Avenue to what was formally known as the Magnet Cinema. This building was remodelled to suit the training requirements of Ogra Dun Dealgan and was renamed Magnet Youth and Community Training Centre.
The workshop provides foundation skills training in a variety of subjects i.e. Woodwork, Metal work, Sewing, Gardening and Computers. Also included in the curriculum are Personal Development skills, Life & Social skills, Numeracy & Literacy skills and Counselling where needed. New courses added to the curriculum recently are Childcare Course and Preparatory Training Programme for Apprenticeship.
The training is available to Early School Leavers both male and female
( students who have not sat the standard leaving certificate) age between 16 and 24 years. In certain cases there are exceptions made. The overall capacity of the workshop is 56 trainees.
AIMS OF OGRA DUN DEALGAN COMMUNITY TRAINING WORKSHOP
· To assist trainees in developing their full potential as mature members of society.
· To enable trainees to assess their vocational preference and equip them with the necessary skills to attain these goals.
· To introduce trainees to a variety of practical skills and crafts.
· To help trainees overcome literacy and numeracy problems.
· Give the trainees more self-confidence and self-reliance.
· Develop a sense of social awareness in trainees.
